The Osseo Lions Club, which works to enrich and improve the lives of citizens in the community, has made a multi-year contribution to the Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance. The continued support demonstrates the organization’s commitment to helping Minnesotans at risk for gambling addiction.
“As an organization that offers charitable gambling opportunities to our patrons, we feel it’s important to make sure that gambling participation is done in a healthy, responsible way,” says Ken Peloquin, Osseo Lions Club gambling manager. “By supporting the efforts of Northstar, we’re able to improve the lives of those for whom gambling becomes an unhealthy addiction and to help prevent others from developing this behavior.”
“The generosity of the Osseo Lions Club helps us to achieve our mission, which is to improve the lives of those affected by problem gambling through advocacy, education, training and research,” says Susan Sheridan Tucker, executive director at Northstar. “Support from community organizations strengthens our alliance of individuals and organizations that believe problem gambling is a serious public health issue that is both preventable and treatable.”
Problem gambling, also known as gambling addiction or compulsive gambling, is defined as the urge to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. It’s estimated that approximately 160,000 to 214,000 Minnesotans struggle with this addictive disorder, which can destroy lives, threaten family relationships and empty personal and family savings.
